Commonly asked questions about submissions, events, and more!

If there is an unanswered question, email us at darkphrases@gm.slc.edu.

  • To submit to DP Digital, pitch your work at darkphrases@gm.slc.edu

To submit to the Spring Print issue, we will open a Google Form when we start to accept submissions.

Please refer to the Submit page for the specific details.

  • Find our detailed submission guidelines on the Submit page of our website. We accept writing and design.

  • Not always! Dark Phrases seeks to elevate voices of students of color, whatever their creative expression may be. Your voice is always part of that community, whether you consider your piece to be centered around your identity as a person of color or not.

However, it would be ideal if all nonfiction submissions will center around your experience as a person of color.

  • As the goal of Dark Phrases is to amplify the voices of students of color within a space that has historically marginalized voices of color, so we willnot accept work created by a non-student of color. (That being said, in our submission form, we do not require that you disclose your racial identity to us. It is completely based on the honor system, so please be honest with us.)

Remember that we love the support from non-people of color and encourage that you amplify our voices by attending our open events and reading the magazine!

  • Yes! If you identify as a person of color, we would love to encounter your work!

  • To find out about our events, join our mailing list by emailing darkphrases@gm.slc.edu indicating your interest or follow @slcdarkphrases on Instagram.

Some of our events are for people of color only (such as submission workshops) but most of our events are open to the public or non-members!

If you are ever unsure, please do not hesitate to email us at darkphrases@gm.slc.edu or DM us on Instagram @slcdarkphrases.
